A Ride Down Arthur Street

Posted On: 10/2/2006 9:42:29 AM - By: C. Hassold
Fifteen years later I still get the jitters driving down Arthur Street when visiting Novato. The familiar trees and tract homes remind me of the days when life revolved around my 1966 Corvair and whatever event I was planning for the upcoming month (I was the spirit commissioner). The years have changed Novato – drastically in many ways. But Arthur Street remains much the same.

For those of you who have not been back to Novato in a while, a lot has changed in fifteen years.  Over the summer I visited campus to stroll through the halls and ponder the less complicated life I once knew. Within twenty seconds of arriving on campus, I was greeted by a familiar face. Dennis, the very friendly custodian and girls softball coach who was at NHS from the late 80`s until the late 1990`s was doing some work with a colleague. Dennis has moved up the ladder to NUSD Facilities Maintenance and just happened to be there at the same time I was! Despite his upward career progression, Dennis has remained as friendly as he was when I was a student.

Though Dennis was terribly busy, he took a moment out of his day to show me the new dance studio and performing arts practice rooms that were placed
adjacent to the old girls locker room. I never knew anything this fancy would find its way to NHS. As some of you may know, our alma mater has quite an impressive arts program thanks to the passion and dedication of Mark Peabody and his colleagues. He leads a group of educators that run Marin School of Arts and Technology (MSA) which is a somewhat recent add-on to the NHS campus. You can read more about them at the link below.

After Dennis went back to work, I strolled around a bit more to find some new buildings, a slightly remodeled senior quad, and some fresh paint. While the school has lots of new attributes, the character that makes NHS special remains. If you ever come back to Novato, I encourage you to stop by and see for yourself.
